This Guitar Notched Straight Edge allows the straightness of the guitar's neck to be measured (using Feeler Gauges also available in our shop) and will will show the amount of 'neck relief' (or how much the guitar neck is bowed forward) which is one of the crucial aspects in setting the guitar's action so you can play it right up the neck. There are a number of You Tube videos that will show you how this is done.
This is important as no amount of adjustment at the bridge will make the action good in the the middle of the fretboard and after the 12th fret if the neck relief is not right.
The Notched Straight Edge is designed so that the flat bottom of the edge can sit directly onto the fretboard - with the notches in the edge 'bridging' over the frets, so that the flatness of the fretboard itself can be seen and measured.
The edge has two sides; one for guitars with a scale length of 25.5 inches (e.g. Fender Stratocaster/Telecaster) and one side for guitars with a scale length of 24.75 inches (e.g. Gibson Les Paul/Gibson J45).
Most guitars have a scale length of one of these two sizes, but we suggest you should check your guitar's scale length by measuring the distance between the nut (which the strings pass over as they reach the top of the guitar and before they reach the tuning machines) and the 12th fret - then doubling that measurement to get your overall scale length.
Length: 16.5 inches (419mm)
